I worked with a barber many years ago.
Angelo was his name. Born and raised in Italy. Came to the states in his late twenties. Wonderful man. I know my gypsy personality drove him nuts, but he tried to tame me as much as I will let anyone. If I see your trying to press your "structured" ways on me, I will kick and scream and be on my way.
When Angelo and I parted I was leaving his shop because I bought my own little place. I thought I'd be there for the rest of my life, working on the wonderful, charming people of the Pennsylvania country side. I did not know or for see what fate had in store.
I had learned a lot from Angelo, who was a very structured man, except when it came to sweeping up his hair! Him and Bob would stand all day in piles of clients hair!! Never sweeping it up till the end of the day!!! OOHHH gosh, state board would have a fit!!
When Angelo and I finally parted ways he sat me down and would give me a speech I will forever hear and hold in my heart. He said to me, " I want to wish you well with your business, but I want to give you some advice, always pay your employees before yourself, and you will never be rich doing this, but you will always live comfortable." Best damn advice I've ever received!
Did you know the average hairdresser only makes $26,000 a year!! Yes, look it up. The stats are available for each state.
I'm going to tell you the absolute truth!!! There has been years in my career I only made $12,000!!!! Ok, with this said, us hairdresser are doing this for the LUV of it not the MONEY!!!! HELLO!!! So when you leave that chair, and you have received great service, please tip well!!! Your five dollars or ten dollars might be going to a single mother or anyone struggling financially. Xoxo
